Rafal Zalech’s artistic activities are widely spread between performance, composition and development of IoT devices for musicians. As a violist he played on most renewed new music festivals on 5 continents, many solo appearances with orchestras such as Webern Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, Divertimento. A member of The Black Page Orchestra, Duo collective Nimikry and a CEO of a Smart-Instruments Startup DigitAize. Between 2010-2021 Zalech intensively worked with one of the most recognised Ensembles for New Music – Klangforum Wien with which he played over 100 concerts. In 2022 Zalech received the prestigious Erste Bank Komposition Preis for his lifetime artistic achievements.

Polish violist, composer and inventor Rafał Dominik Zalech was born in Wrocław in 1988. He studied viola and electroacoustic composition at the University of Music in Vienna, which he graduated with honors, as well as at Yale University (USA) and in Wrocław. In the years 2012-2021 he worked with one of the most leading Contemporary Music Ensembles – Klangforum Wien, with which he took part in many album productions, as well as in countless concerts around the world. He is currently a member of the Vienna-based Black Page Orchestra, and is a co-member of the Duo Nimikry and the Duo van Vliet.
Intensive research on the technology of digitization of gestures on string instruments resulted in the receipt of an international patent. This advanced technology is being currently used by the DigitAize Smart Music Instruments company he co-founded.
As a violist (and composer) he regularly appears at the most important festivals of new music, incl. Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Wien Modern, Ultrasonic Berlin, Transameriques Montreal. His active concert activity in recent years has included numerous performances, guest lectures and workshops at the invitation of academic institutions – Teatro Colon Academy in Buenos Aires, Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Electronic Music Collective in New York, National Music Conservatory in Beijing and the Vienna University of Music.
His solo debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus with G. Grisey’s Les espaces Acoustiques for viola solo and orchestra (Wien Modern Festival 2017) received very good reviews in the main Austrian daily press (Die Presse, Der Standard). The performance of the same piece during the Warsaw Autumn opening concert (2022) with OMN and Sinfonia Varsovia conducted by Sz. Bywalec was also the first Polish performance of a huge work by a French composer.
Zalech’s scientific work focuses on research on the electronic support of classical acoustic instruments and their use in the artistic field. Both in training and working with new music ensembles in the context of concert, theatre and opera projects, Rafał Zalech strives to combine compositions and interpretations, classical and other musical styles. In doing so, he consciously relies on the internal musical discourse in composition and sound, and in his works, he develops his own way of communicating with the audience beyond the usual sonicity and structures.
Rafał Zalech is a scholarship holder of, among others Ministry of Culture in Austria, J. Windisch scholarship, The Thyll-Dürr Foundation, Mica Austria and a member of the «Sylff» program of the Tokyo Foundation. In 2017, Zalech received a scholarship from the Austrian Federal Chancellery (Arts and Culture) for outstanding graduates of art universities throughout Austria.

Polski altowiolista, kompozytor i wynalazca Rafał Dominik Zalech urodził się we Wrocławiu w 1988 roku. Studiował grę na altówce oraz kompozycję elektroakustyczną na Uniwersytecie Muzycznym w Wiedniu, który ukończył z wyróżnieniem, a także na Uniwersytecie Yale (USA) i we Wrocławiu. W latach 2012-2021 współpracował z jednym z najbardziej czołowych Zespołów Muzyki Współczesnej – Klangforum Wien, z którym brał udział w wielu produkcjach płytowych, a także w niezliczonych koncertach na całym świecie. Obecnie jest członkiem wiedeńskiej The Black Page Orchestra, współtworzy duet Nimikry oraz Duo van Vliet.
Intensywne badania nad technologią cyfryzacji gestów na instrumentach smyczkowych zaowocowały otrzymaniem międzynarodowego patentu, zaś obecnie, ów technologia wykorzystywana jest przez założoną przez niego firmę DigitAize Smart Music Instruments, której jest prezesem.
Jako altowiolista (i kompozytor) regularnie pojawia się na najważniejszych festiwalach muzyki nowej, m.in. Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Wien Modern, Ultrasonic Berlin, Transameriques Montreal. Jego aktywna działalność koncertowa w ostatnich latach obejmowała liczne występy, wykłady gościnne i warsztaty na zaproszenie instytucji akademickich – Akademia Teatro Colon w Buenos Aires, Konserwatorium Czajkowskiego w Moskwie, Electronic Music Collective w Nowym Jorku, National Music Conservatory w Pekinie oraz Wiedeński Uniwersytet Muzyczny.
Jego solowy debiut w wiedeńskim Konzerthaus z Les espaces Acoustiques G. Griseya na altówkę solo i orkiestrę (Wien Modern Festival 2017) zdobył bardzo dobre recenzje w głównej austriackiej prasie codziennej (Die Presse, Der Standard). Wykonanie tego samego utworu podczas koncertu otwierającego Warszawską Jesień (2022) u boku OMN i Sinfoni Varsovi pod dyrekcją Sz. Bywalca było jednocześnie pierwszym polskim wykonaniem olbrzymiego dzieła francuskiego kompozytora.
Praca naukowa Zalecha skupia się na badaniach nad elektronicznym wspomaganiem klasycznych instrumentów akustycznych i ich wykorzystaniem w dziedzinie artystycznej. Zarówno w szkoleniu, jak i pracy z zespołami nowej muzyki w kontekście projektów koncertowych, teatralnych, operowych, Rafał Zalech dąży do połączenia kompozycji i interpretacji, klasycznych i innych stylów muzycznych. Czyniąc to, świadomie opiera się na wewnętrznym dyskursie muzycznym w kompozycji i dźwięku, a w swoich pracach rozwija własny sposób porozumiewania się z publicznością poza zwykłą dźwiękowością i strukturami.
Rafał Zalech jest stypendystą m.in. Ministerstwa Kultury w Austrii, stypendium J. Windischa, The Thyll-Dürr Foundation, Mica Austria oraz członkiem programu «Sylff» Fundacji Tokijskiej. W 2017 roku Zalech otrzymał stypendium austriackiej Kancelarii Federalnej (sztuka i kultura) dla wybitnych absolwentów uczelni artystycznych w całej Austrii.

Der polnische Bratschist, Komponist und Erfinder Rafał Dominik Zalech wurde 1988 in Wrocław geboren. Er studierte Bratsche und elektroakustische Komposition an der Universität für Musik in Wien, die er mit Auszeichnung abschloss, sowie an der Yale University (USA) und in Wrocław. In den Jahren 2012-2021 arbeitete er mit einem der führenden Ensembles für zeitgenössische Musik – dem Klangforum Wien, mit dem er an vielen Albumproduktionen sowie an unzähligen Konzerten auf der ganzen Welt teilnahm. Derzeit ist er Mitglied des in Wien ansässigen Black Page Orchestra und Co-Mitglied des Duo Nimikry und des Duo van Vliet.
Intensive Forschung zur Technologie der Digitalisierung von Gesten auf Streichinstrumenten führte zum Erhalt eines internationalen Patents. Diese fortschrittliche Technologie wird derzeit von dem von ihm mitbegründeten Unternehmen DigitAize Smart Music Instruments verwendet.
Als Bratschist (und Komponist) tritt er regelmäßig bei den wichtigsten Festivals für Neue Musik auf, u. a. Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Wien Modern, Ultrasonic Berlin, Transameriques Montreal. Sein Solodebüt am Wiener Konzerthaus mit G. Griseys Les espaces Acoustiques für Viola solo und Orchester (Wien Modern Festival 2017) erhielt sehr gute Kritiken in der wichtigsten österreichischen Tagespresse (Die Presse, Der Standard). Die Aufführung desselben Stücks während des Eröffnungskonzerts „Warschauer Herbst“ (2022) mit OMN und Sinfonia Varsovia unter der Leitung von Sz. Bywalec war auch die erste polnische Aufführung eines großen Werks eines französischen Komponisten.
Zalechs wissenschaftliche Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Erforschung der elektronischen Unterstützung klassischer akustischer Instrumente und deren Einsatz im künstlerischen Bereich. Sowohl in der Ausbildung als auch in der Arbeit mit neuen Musikensembles im Rahmen von Konzert-, Theater- und Opernprojekten strebt Rafał Zalech danach, Kompositionen und Interpretationen, klassische und andere Musikstile zu verbinden. Dabei setzt er bewusst auf den internen musikalischen Diskurs in Komposition und Klang und entwickelt in seinen Werken eine eigene Art der Kommunikation mit dem Publikum jenseits der üblichen Klanglichkeit und Strukturen.
Rafał Zalech ist unter anderem Stipendiat des Kulturministeriums in Österreich, des J. Windisch-Stipendiums, der Thyll-Dürr-Stiftung, der Mica Austria und Mitglied des «Sylff»-Programms der Tokyo Foundation. 2017 erhielt Zalech ein Stipendium des österreichischen Bundeskanzleramtes (Kunst und Kultur) für herausragende Absolventinnen und Absolventen von Kunstuniversitäten in ganz Österreich.
